World Statistics Day 2025: Marked by Quality, Trust, and Accessible Data

World Statistics Day will be celebrated on 20 October this year under the slogan “Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone”. Experts dedicated to data collection and analysis, as well as organizations and institutions shaping public policies, are using this occasion to emphasize the importance of reliable data as the foundation of trust, responsible decision-making, and progress.

The Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina joins this global initiative, which – according to the decision of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly – is celebrated every five years, reaffirming the role of official statistics in building an open and informed society.

The last World Statistics Day, in 2020, took place in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when it became clear how crucial reliable data are for making rapid and responsible decisions. Today, in a world marked by climate change, digital transformation, and growing inequalities, quality data sources remain essential for understanding changes, designing and planning sustainable solutions, monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals, and strengthening trust in institutions.

This year, the UN has called on Member States, international partners, academia, the media, and civil society to jointly promote the importance of accurate, independent, and transparent information as a public good. As part of the celebration, the UN Statistics Division and UN regional commissions will organize on 20 October a global 24-hour data marathon dedicated to knowledge and experience sharing – an online event that connects all continents and time zones. The program will showcase data innovations, examples of good practices from different countries, panel discussions, and interactive content demonstrating the power of data to connect people and ideas, and to foster positive change. The entire program will be available via live stream on the official UN website.

In its message, the UN recalls that the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics form the basis of the professional independence, credibility, and transparency of institutions producing official data, as only information grounded in scientific and ethical standards can contribute to responsible governance.

World Statistics Day is also an opportunity to recognize the individuals who collect, process, and share official data with the wider public every day. Their dedicated work, though often invisible, is of crucial importance for planning and social development.
