Equality Under the Spotlight: New Edition of the Publication “Women and Men in Bosnia and Herzegovina”
Gender equality implies equal access to rights, resources, and opportunities, regardless of sex. The extent to which this principle is achieved in practice is most reliably demonstrated through statistics. Sex-disaggregated data enable the measurement of actual differences, monitoring of trends over time, and assessment of the impact of public policies on different population groups.

In this context, the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina has published a new edition of the publication “Women and Men in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, which provides a comprehensive statistical overview of the position of women and men across key areas of social and economic life.

Statistical Indicators Revealing Differences

The publication presents comparative indicators on women and men in the areas of demography, education, labour market, healthcare, social protection, judiciary, and participation in decision-making processes. The data are presented in a clear and accessible manner, with emphasis on long-term trends, enabling assessment of whether the gender gap is narrowing, remaining unchanged, or widening.

The publication’s particular value lies in its role as an analytical tool: it not only presents the current situation but also enables identification of areas where disparities are most pronounced and where targeted public policy measures are needed.

Education and the Labour Market: Disparity Between Achievement and Outcomes

Statistical data show that women in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on average, achieve higher levels of educational attainment than men. However, this advantage is not reflected to the same extent in the labour market or in access to decision-making positions. Employment rates, income levels, and representation in managerial and political positions continue to indicate a significant gender imbalance.

This disparity between educational attainment and economic and social outcomes remains one of the key gender equality challenges in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Data as a Basis for Decision-Making

Sex-disaggregated statistics represent an indispensable foundation for the development, monitoring, and evaluation of policies aimed at reducing gender inequalities. The publication “Women and Men in Bosnia and Herzegovina” is intended for decision-makers, researchers, media, and the general public as a reliable data source for informed discussion and evidence-based planning.
