Expert Assessment of the Statistical System of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Peer Review) Begins
The Agency for Statistics of BiH (BHAS), with Eurostat, started the first expert assessment (Peer Review) of the European Statistics Code of Practice application within the BiH statistical system on May 19. This important activity will continue until May 27, 2026.
The European Statistics Code of Practice establishes high standards that guide the development, production, and dissemination of official statistics. It comprises 16 core principles with corresponding indicators covering key areas of the statistical system's operations: the institutional environment, statistical processes, and statistical outputs. In the context of European integration, this process represents a crucial step toward further aligning the statistical processes and production of official statistics in Bosnia and Herzegovina with European Union standards. A Peer Review is conducted periodically across all European Union and EFTA countries, as well as candidate countries, with the aim of enhancing the quality, reliability, and transparency of statistical data.
The evaluation process itself is based on a detailed analysis of information submitted in advance through the Self-Assessment Questionnaire and supporting documentation. The core of the process consists of a multi-day visit by an expert team composed of prominent and relevant specialists from the statistical offices of European Union member states and Eurostat. The expert team consists of:
- Mr. Marko Krištof – Team Leader (Chairperson)
- Ms. Claudia Junker – Team Member (Member)
- Ms. Karin Blix – Team Member (Member)
During the visit, the expert team will hold a series of intensive meetings with representatives of the three statistical institutions in BiH (the Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Institute for Statistics of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Republika Srpska Institute of Statistics), as well as with key stakeholders of the statistical system, including the Central Bank of BiH, data providers, data users, the academic community, media, and other target groups of statistical data users.
The implementation of the Peer Review process will further confirm Bosnia and Herzegovina's commitment to adopting European standards and ensuring high-quality statistical data essential for strategic decision-making and the country's further economic and social development.
