20 October: 10th Anniversary of European Statistics Day
This year marks ten years since the first European Statistics Day, celebrated on 20 October 2016. The initiative was launched in Budapest by the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC), with the support of the European Statistical System (ESS) and the European System of Central Banks.
The 10th anniversary is being celebrated under the motto “European Statistics at a crossroads: priorities, opportunities and constraints” – a theme that aptly reflects the current position of official statistics, faced with new opportunities, changing user expectations and the need to maintain quality and trust.
The Agency for Statistics of Bosnia and Herzegovina will mark 20 October by bringing together users and providers of statistical data, representatives of institutions and partners with whom the Agency cooperates. The event will provide an opportunity to present some of the Agency’s current work – from statistical products and the publication “Bosnia and Herzegovina in Figures” to new ways of accessing, using and visualising data, as well as selected development and international activities.
Special attention will be devoted to statistical literacy and to ways of bringing official statistics closer to young people. The event will also provide an opportunity for direct dialogue with users about the data they use, the data they need and how we can make statistical information more accessible and easier to use.
Ten years after the first European Statistics Day, data sources, technologies and the ways in which users access information have changed considerably. This makes this year’s discussion on the priorities, opportunities and constraints facing official statistics particularly relevant. What has not changed is the need for reliable data that help us better understand society and the world around us.
