Statistics for the Future: IUS Students Visited the Agency for Statistics of BiH
With the aim of raising the level of statistical literacy and public awareness about the benefits of the practical use of official data, the Agency for Statistics of BiH (BHAS) hosted around thirty students from the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), specialising in economics and business studies.
Addressing young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world, who are gaining knowledge at IUS for analysing economic data and conducting research in business environments, Vesna Ćužić, Director of BHAS, emphasised the developmental potential of statistics. She highlighted the importance of data in political, social, and economic decision-making and reforms, as well as the indispensable role of statistics in Bosnia and Herzegovina's EU integration process.
Through a presentation and discussion with BHAS experts, including Edin Šabanović, Assistant Director, Enes Hadžiefendić, Head of the Department for Statistical Methodologies, Standards, Planning, Quality, and Coordination, and Alen Mrguda, Head of the Editorial and Publication Department, students gained insight into the specificities of the BiH statistical system, the role of BHAS, the types of data it produces, and modern methodologies for data collection, processing, and publication based on Eurostat recommendations. The dynamic nature of the statistical profession was also highlighted, driven by the constant development of methodologies, IT technologies, and the need for alignment with EU standards.
During the presentation, students explored practical examples, such as labour market statistics, data on deficit professions, and migration trends, gaining a clearer understanding of how data facilitates various decision-making processes—even those as personal as choosing a university or future career. Students were particularly interested in innovative tools, new statistical products, BHAS's communication with the private sector, and opportunities for employment and career development in the field of statistics.
